NO CREDIT CARD INFO STOLEN, SAYS EGGHEAD.COM

Posted at January 08, 2001 06:15 AM Pacific

NO CUSTOMER CREDIT card information was stolen in last
month's attack on Egghead.com's computer systems, the
company's president and CEO, Jeff Sheahan, said in an
e-mail to the company's registered customers on Monday.

Credit card companies report that fewer than 7,500
credit card accounts appearing in Egghead's customer
database show "suspected fraudulent activity," Sheahan
said. This represents just 0.2 percent of the 3
million credit card accounts registered in the
database at the time of the attack, he said.

That is scary. I have used Egghead but it was a long time ago and that CC# is no longer valid. People need to secure their holdings if e-commerce is going to continue. This could easily scare the masses away.

The obvious way for consumers to combat this is in the future is to avoid storing credit card numbers on e-commerce sites. DiscoverCard has a one-time random number generating "credit-card" number to use for online purchases. I hope more companies follow suit.
