I wasn't even thinking of this question until I posted what was in my computer system and someone asked me about it. I have a PIII 1GHz with a 5 1/4 floppy, does anyone else have one or is it just me, and if so what kind of computer do you have it in?

Also did you notice that Windows XP does not have an updated icon for a 5 1/4 like it does for the 3.5 floppy, it is the same as Win98?

Man...is everyone on that beautiful island as eccentric as you are, Melanson? You are weird, man.

LOL! :p

I would keep that bugger just to be different. Rock on, d00d!

Since I guess I'm responsible for you 'curiousity', I suppose I should reply. I have an external 5.25 drive for my C64, does that count?:p

Well since I can't see alot of people going with 5 1/4 I would say a C64 is the best I can go for. You definatly gotta be different, it may look ugly but it doesn't slow my computer down, it is hard to find disks for but one thing about it is if anyone has an old XT or anything or even an old hame on 5 1/4 (I played a couple, most have a speed prob on a 1 GHz, they kinda run fast) I can get them. And what an island it is full of 3.5 and 5 1/4 in grass:D. I think there is an 8 1/4 inch drive, there is something. One other thing I did try in my Celery 500 is put an MFM controller and drive in but I couldn't get it to work so I gave up:D. The way I see it if it can be done and won't hurt the machine then do it.

PS: the MFM drive took 2 5 1/4in bays so I would have to loose the 5 1/4, DVD or Burner, can't do that though.

PS: my circa '91 486DX/33 and circa '93 486DX2/66 had 5.25 drives, but nothing that I've owned since about 1997 has had one.

I have a 5 1/4 floppy in my TANDY 1000 TL/2.

I am running Windows XP, I ran Windows 2000 before, both support the drive quite well and even see it as a 5 1/4. The 5 1/4 has been in all my computers since I got my 386 SX 33, It is high density, I have a couple I even put one in my school computer for college.

Smelanson, it is probably time to put the 5 1/4 out to pasture.:t

I could dig up a couple of them and send them to you to set them up in RAID0. That would give you at least 100KB/s!!!

I hope you didn't mind the joke (and no floppy drives cannot be put in RAID).

I actually have one in operating condition and a few tens of discs that actually work. I keep putting it off, but I really want to set this box up (486 DX2/66, 32MB RAM, 420MB HD, 2x CDROM and 2MB CL VL GFX) with Win 3.1

Sounds like a good place to store secret files. No one could ever access them but you. :x

Also it attracts attention, the most often aske question, does that still work? Doesn't it slow down your computer?

I have about 8 or 9, 5 1/4 drives and disks to go with them and they do work. The rest of them wind up in parts, the short screws work fine for just about everything.:)

I have a 5 1/4 on my secondary system which is a P100, 64 MB, 3GB drive, that dual boots to win3.1 and windows NT. The drive was on my 486dx which I ditched 2 years ago when I got my hands on the P100 for nothing.
I just use this system for experimenting before I do something to the main. I also us it to play old games some of which I have on 5 1/4 floppy's.
However, using the 5 1/4 on my main system was not even a consideration.

The 5 1/4 is only in my PIII 1 GHz, I also have a P133, 486 OD DX 75@120, and a Celery 500@562, I would have one in each of those but most of my drives are low density

You gotta be different!

I just removed my 5 1/4 drive from my machine.
But it was an old combo 3 1/2 + 5 1/4.
Replaced it with a plain jane 3 1/2, to free up the 5 1/4 bay...

My Uncle has one, but no disks to use in it. I keep asking him if I can grab it off him, but people seem to get very attached to those things (in case you were wondering, he told me to go jump:( turned into  ).

You do tend to get attached to some things, I do still have disks and I know where I can buy them to but they are more expensive then 3.5 in floppys but there cool:D

GAH!! You're hurting my eyes! There...that's better.

Hey Melanson...that's my favorite case you have there! $35 locally, light and holds a lot of stuff. Well ventilated too. I have two here and build my systems for clients with the mini-tower version - $29. I wish I knew what to call it. It has no real brand.

Thats a good question, what brand is it? If I find out I will tell ya, and bipolar if you find out you'll have to tell me. Your right it is really good at cooling, thank god, It is the case I got from college, the only part left from the orgional computer. It used to be a Celeron 533 with 64 Mb of RAM. Where I live it is 50 to 60 bucks but that is in CDN funds.
