Prolly yanked the ribbon cable or power cable from the harddrive OR, if the harddrive was set to master or single drive, and you installed the CD drive on the same ribbon cable as a master, it will detect neither.

If thats the case, set the Harddrive to Master and CD-r to slave.

how would I go about doing that? like.. how do i set it to master or single drive?

I have one ribbon connecting the CD drive to the master drive.. is that wrong?

you can specify the drive to be Master, Slave, CS, etc by setting the jumpers on the drive itself. The jumper is located near the IDE cable input pins. There will be a jumper setting instruction on the drive itself or just above the jumper pins. It will be marked like [i] MS, SL, CS.. etc..It's also possible that you may need to look in the drive manual to set the jumpers if the information isn't on the drive itself.

Post the brand and model of the drive that you're trying to set the jumpers on if you get lost.

You don't need to look all over the computer to get to the jumpers, just look behind the drive near the pins where you connect the power. Here is a link to get an idea where the jumpers for the hard disk is....
http://support.euro.dell.com/docs/storage/1198d/jumpers.htm

NOTE: This is not the specific jumper setting for your drive! This is just an illustration of where the jumper is located

You need to change the jumpers on the new drive - they are set to be the same as the HD.
They are located in the other end of the drive contrary to the slot/tray thingy..

In most manuals the preocedure is very well described - if the other IDE port is free, try plugging it into that one instead.

Hope i helped... a bit...
