I assume you are talking about haveing one small partition witht he OS and other partitions for the data.
The benefit is that the OS partition fragmentation is kept to a minimum. This leads to better overall performance.
That's it in a nutshell...

Yep, I also by the rule of always having a dedicated partition for the OS only! I have dedicated partitions for Apps and Pagefile as well. It makes life a lot easier when you need to reinstall the OS when you do a fresh install of Win2K since Win2K wipes out all the other directories when Win2K is reinstalled.

When my HD started failing, it did so on my C partition. That may or may not sound good, but in the end, it left my data & program partitions almost unaffected (before I copied everything to a new drive).
