Has anyone had the following problem....

I have the ASUS A7V333 MB (Raid, firewire etc) but have one anoying little problem. When you want to restart the PC ..IE Start\restart... the PC will not restart.

Windows ME says your system was unable to restart and XP just hangs on the Windows is saving your details.

I have a USB mouse and this shuts down, so windows apears to be trying to shut down, just not the system.

I have looked at all the Details about the MB but cant find anything that could cause this.

The reset and power buttons seem to work fine and this is the only way i can restart (by pressing the reset switch)

So has anyone come across this problem before, either on this MB or another one ?

it sounds to me that the problem is something is refusing to shut down or close when asked by windows. Try hitting ctrl-alt-del in ME or open task manager and see what is running. The only applications that are truly needed to run Windows are Explorer.exe and Systray.exe (at least thats win95-WinME) try that. If your machine shuts down and restarts try closing down programs one at a time and see what happens.

You can also run MSConfig (in win98SE+) and see what is started up.

Just a thought and I am not a pro nor familiar exactly with running these opsys' (XP/ME) you quoted. The <advanced tab>window from within "msconfig" (typed into "run" form the start menu) / general tab / advanced / then "disable fast shut down" ...might, maybe, could possibly help with the problem? Might be a mute point...or might not even be a viable option with your opsys...but is it worth a try...then restart from your computer switch and see if it makes a diff. Hope it helps, only a thought tho.

I/ve had problems with restart similar to yours and found it to alleviate my troubles. Sometimes windows has trouble keeping things sorted out when doing a fast shutdown. But why it doesn't affect your main switch/restart switch shut downs might dismiss my idea too.

Thanks for the input, but i should also mention, when i was installing Windows (the part where it restarts itself a few times) it would not restart then either. So surley it has to be with the MB settings ?

This one has baffled me for a while and im sure its something simple. Either that or there is a problem with the MB.

Plus XP does not have the option you mention, its mostly startup items that you can amend.

Any futher input is welcome.
