Which OS ???????

There are so many different flavours of UNIX, most of them proprietry. There are a couple of free ones for the PC, Sun Solaris, SCO, BSD, etc. Linux is a pretty good UNIX-like OS, too. Unless you have cable or an ISDN line, dont bother trying to download any of these. Buy the media for a minimal cost, at a swap-meet or from the vendor's web site.

Go to www.lsl.com (http://www.lsl.com) or www.cheapbytes.com (http://www.cheapbytes.com) and pick a linux distro for a few bucks.
Be warned, the software is cheap, but you pay more for installation guides.

If you've got a high speed modem, go to: http://linuxiso.org and download any flavor (in ISO format) you want!

I recommend checking out FreeBSD for a reliable x86 Unix platform:

http://www.freebsd.org/

Also check out these other great alternative operating systems (free download versions available):

http://www.qnx.com (personal favorite)
http://www.beos.com

Good Luck,
