I found a quantum 30gb HD in the trash where I work. I took it home to see what was wrong & it would not spin. I checked maxtors site since they acquired quantum & entered the drive's serial number & it was still under warranty!
I got an RMA number & sent it back. Within 6 business days they sent me a brand new 40gb 7200rpm drive! I used to avoid maxtor because in my opinion, they were slow & noisy. Not the one they sent me. It makes no noise & is fast. I just wanted to pass this on to anyone in the near future that was considering what brand of hard disks to buy.

Maxtor, like any other manufacturer has had their problems, but RMA'ing a bad drive isn't one of them. Maxtor has one of the best, if not THE best RMA, no questions asked, deals going.

Glad you lucked out...or should I say, fell in a honey well and came out smelling like a rose.
