Hello, OK, i have a really simple question. I want to get a new CD-Rom, but i want a good one for ripping CDs. I don't want a DVD or CD-RW cauz i know that some are really good at ripping CDs. I just want a plain CD-rom drive that doesn't cost a fortune. can anybody recommend a drive, and post it's digital extraction speed???

thanx

OK:

Kenwood true 72x will DAE at ....48x
as long as they are pressed CD's not cdr's or rw's.

Affrey's will do 26x the 2050 and 28x the 2056

Asus 50x will give you almost 27x
Asus 40x will give you about 22x

Aopen 932 will do 30x

Teac 540E will do 30x

Plextor (Ultra 40max) will take you to 32x but it's SCSI.

EDIT: all the above are rated 10! that is no error in DAE. Also they will never go bellow 17x (so they can do 16x burning just fine).

Personally I have used all the above except the Kenwood and the 2050 Affrey that I have seen DAE'ing and they indeed do what I mention. I stuck with the Ultraplex because I just loved it, and it's SCSI.

I think the Aopen is the best DAE choice from the rest, but the 50x ASUS will be better (slightly) in data due to the lower access time. The Teac is best overall but difficult to find. If the 40x ASUS is all you find, then get it (but 16x burning might be on the limit). It's very fast!

The creative 5233 (is this the one ND?) is not rated for 16x as inner track DAE about 12x (I wouldn't buy it for 12x burning either with all the competition). This is the first creative drive with decent DAE. All others (including the 48x) are very poor (less than 8x), so generally I'd stay away from them.

Personally I would avoid low DAE drives. DAE speed shows the quality of the drive. The reason I kept the Plextor (and that the Teac is the best of the rest) is that they will read ANYTHING and RIP it as well. That's from scratched old CDR's to protected and locked CD's.

In fact, I don't like Creative either, but the dude asked something cheap, and as I remember, Asus indeed did VERY good job (I believe it can read even steel can tops http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/smile.gif ), but it costed few months ago almost twice than Creative ...

Thanx for the sugestions. I currently have a creative 48X drive and it only extracts at 7.9. http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/frown.gif

The Aopen sounds pretty good. 30X is a big improvement. And i'm not tooooo worried about 16X writing. I have had my 4X write for a while and i dont' see myself changing to a faster one for a while.

I will also look for the kenwood but i have a feeling it won't fit my budget.

thanx everyone!

PriceWatch :
Aopen : 35-50 US$
Kenwood : 75-90 US$

Acid_burn~187, you want plain CD-ROM with high-speed DAE, don't you ? Not a CD-R/W ?
Besides, does it really matters how much time does it takes to rip entire CD, two minutes or two and a half ?
