I bought an Intellimouse Optical a month back and I am for the most part happy with it. There is one irritant about it though; the resolution is not so great. when I try to do fine movements with it (such as drawing a line in MS Paint), it moves several pixels at a time. my old MS mouse had much finer movements. Any way to improve the resolution on this thing? I've tried setting the pointer speed to slow, med and fast with no change.

Is it PS2? Because the PS2 rate adjuster program I got off of www.tweakfiles.com (http://www.tweakfiles.com) worked on my optical. Kind of strange though, because no matter what I set it to, it would run at half that. I set it to 200, and it ran at 100. Whatever though, 100 > 40.

I tried that proggy just now, but it made no difference. I have the USB/PS2 mouse with the PS2 adapter, using it in my PS2 port. Perhaps my first post wasn't clear; when I try to move the optical mouse in small incriments, the cursor/pointer moves several pixels at a time (about 1\2 of this text height). My old mouse would make the cursor/pointer move a single pixel at a time.

I don't have a reason, but I read where the USB connection is much more precise than through the PS2.

In case you didn't see it before, here's Microsoft's answer... http://support.microsoft.com/support/kb/articles/Q275/4/73.ASP?LN=EN-US&SD=gn&FR=0&qry=resolution&rnk=100&src=DHCS_MSPSS_gn_SRCH&SPR=IM

I tried the M$ cure (see my first post), but the resolution is the same... I will try setting it up in my USB port tommorrow and will let you know how that works.
I might wind up setting up both mice so I can use the old one with better resolution for my graphics and use the optical mouse for general use. That sort of makes buying the opti mouse seem a waste of money tho. http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/frown.gif

First, nothing wrong with having multiple mice connected. I have three hooked up to mine.

Second, USB is only more precise with things at their default values. USB mice have a refresh rate of 125hz whereas PS/2 mice default to only 40hz (which is a carryover standard from the serial port). However, the PS/2 port's refresh rate can be adjusted up to 200hz, much higher than USB is capable of.

Now with that stuff outta the way, on to your problem. Are you using the drivers that came with the mouse? You should make sure you are using those or if there are newer drivers availible for download then use the newest availible. It's possible that the standard mouse drivers built into Windoze will work but might not accurately inturpet the optical mouse signals...possibly causing a glich like you're experiencing.

Also, try the optical mouse on a number of varied surfaces, with different textures and different colors/patterns.
