You mean that it resets itself or that it won't shut down without restarting itself?

hi there!

do you run win XP on a Asus P3C-2000?

if not, there may be a driver incompatibility. check that out.

Hi

Hidden away somewhere in XP is a switch - on by default -
which reboots the sys on hard errors. It can be turned off but i'm
stuck to remember the procedure. I think its somewhere in
the error reporting controls. Anyone know offhand?.

Control Panel > System > Advanced (don't you love that?) > Startup and Recovery > bottom.

if it keeps occasionally rebooting, it's probably a driver problem.
Mine used to do that even with all the "correct" drivers, found a second, newer modem driver and that solved it.

Look here:

You should plan on backing up your stuff and format/reinstall soon. You could also skip the repair and reinstall, but if there's a virus in there, it will remain. Best to wipe. :(

Thanhspine - Don't despair. I know where you're comin from on this one.

I have similar kit sitting in the lounge downstairs relegated to a rather good Media centre.

Asus CUSL2-C Black pearl 512mb SGI 1600SW on 3DLabs Oxygen VX1, 2x40 gb Fujitsu's
TV card, Aureal sound, i-panel (Pretty lights).

I call it 'she' because its one real ***** when things go south.

Here's The hard way to sort it.
-------------------------------

I found the Board set up and driver install sequence - critical to reliable use.
If you are going to a re-install here is my experience.

Immediatly after OS setup get the latest Intel 815E Drivers onboard. This is a must.
If the latest 815e drivers prove troublesome work back through the versions.
Leave everything else - until happy the Mobo & Intel Drivers work together properly.
Work through and understand the Bios settings.

This I can't recommend but i actually put time aside to see how many different
ways i could crash the m/c through bios whilst considering putting the mobo
to a firing squad.

Bring the rest of the system together one at a time. Video then sound, modem etc.
This step by step **** went on a bit but built a stable m\c as each error popped up to be solved.

In regard the sound - I think an on board option was available.
Check this is disabled if fitted.

The truth and support for this board are out there
but it can be a real trip hackin it yourself if that way minded.

Its a controversial board - no real middle ground. Loved or hated. Quality probs maybe.
Running well its everything its cracked upto be.
Setting up proved demanding - a labour.

Finally XP wasn't around when the board was designed - have you run with SE\ME.
I settled on ME eventually and swap out the boot drive now and again to build
a Beos 5 Configuration for it. Same problem - DRIVERS.

Here's the easy way to sort it.
------------------------------- Return to Vendor or RMA to ASUS.

There was aGolden egg at http://www.cusl2.com/
But l can't bring the link up.

Here is amost excellent review and other things not much related

Finally turning off the reboot on error feature of XP should move things along to the real prob.
It would be interesting to learn if the feature switch's back on from recovery console although the XPboot screen 'recover to last working configuration' is a good shortcut back to life.
I'll look into this one evening.

Hey! a quickie. Are you using broadband.
