Have installed pci internal modem and loaded drivers. Keep getting error message "couldn't open port".
System is amd k6.2.500 win 98SE.
Any ideas please.

do u have anything else using modem?(answering machine,fax,etc.)turn them off before testing edit sorry misunderstood is it not pnp? uninstall other modem if u haveor remove from system

If it is like some modems you can reinstall it till you are blue in the face. Go to your modem under the control panel. Go to the modem's properties. There you can change the com port form 1 to 2 or vise verse. Some are com3 and 4 it depends on the mobo really. Just change it to the other. IF it still doesnt work try reinstalling and choose the other port when asked which port to use. If still no go go to start>progs>acces>sys tools>sys info. There open on the right side components>ports>seriel and check the com ports info as to see if conflicting or being used by other devise.
You can have two modems, I have, you just need to make sure they are on dif ports is all. My usr external can run another modem in tangent so as to be 112k dial up. You just choose to bind the two devises but that some thing else all together.:)

uninstall your modem and re-install it if still the same , move your modem card to another slot , if same story adjust your modem com port 3 or4,if you can’t adjust disable the com1or 2 from your bios,
