I made the fatal mistake of Flashing the Bios. On doing so ( from DOS) the programe froze and i had to reboot. Obviuosly in doing so, it appears the BIOS chip is now dead. Pc will not bootup at all, so can not even re-flash with orginal BIOS.

So, i m looking to replace the BIOS chip. I have already bought a new MB but would alos like to save the old board to use as another PC. So rather than spend more on a new board, i was looking for a supplier of BIOS chips from within the UK.

I have written to ASUS (maker of the board) and requested information but have not heard from them in weeks (no suprise there).

I have found a supplier in the US called BIOSWORLD. The chip is $30 but the import is $45, so no cheaper thatn buying a new board. If i can find a supplier in the UK for the same prise (£20-£30) that would be great. In trying to find though is a needle in a haystack.

So i was hopeing that someone out there could help, if at least point me in the right direction.

I have (had) a ASUS A7A266 board with a Pheonix Bios chip on. (and yes i have tried Pheonix also, no reply)

So please can anyone help ?

Welcome To SysOpt!

Because of problems like you experienced, there are motherboard on the market that have two bios built-in the motherboard. That might be something to consider on your next purchase.

I was considering this optiom before i replaced the board, but decided against it. Like i said, i have already replaced the board with the new ASUS A7V333.

I still would like to get the old one working, as its a shame to waste what is still a good board.

I'm not 100% sure about your board, but for most current boards the bios chip cannot be removed from the board. However, it is possible to recover, if you have the proper equipment. I suggest you phone around to your local computer shops and / or wait for an answer from ASUS. You could also try checking a site such as www.mrbios.com . However, if your board's bios chip cannot be physically removed, they will simply send you a disc with a flash utility and bios update (which isn't going to do you any good).

Thanks for the imput. The site mentioned doesnt ship to the UK. The BIOS is removable, its currently sitting in an anti static bag as we speak.

I was wondering though, if i put another BIOS chip in from an older board, can i flash that with the correct BIOS ? or is that just wishful thinking ?

At this rate i think it going to be easier to buy a new board.......or open a business that does this !!! Im sure im not alone in this BIOS hell.....

If your chips is already dead, then this won't matter,

Get your old bios chip and try to reach post.....

carefully, if that is possible, remove old chip while all is still powered up.......

hot swap the failed chip into place........

reflash from the floppy disk...........

there is an exceptionally good chance you could ruin both chips(BTW check they have the same number of pins first) using this very dodgy, at your own risk, technique.

Alternatively, get ASUS to send you a new chip, with latest bios, for a small charge.
