Windows XP can do formats during the installation, and if you boot of the XP CD and choose repair then you can goto a command prompt and type DISKPART, it is like FDISK but for XP, XP also supports formatting while in the OS, Just don't format the boot partition. BipolarBill 05-10-2002, 01:09 AM You can delete/format the Win2K partition with Disk Manager in Computer Management in XP. That's easy. If both are on drive C:, you will have to determine which Windows folder is which (WinNT/Windows). Make sure that the default startup OS is XP and then delete the Win2K system folder. Edit the BOOT.INI file to remove the 2nd startup path and that does it. As smelanson says, don't delete/format C:. gtr 05-10-2002, 09:55 AM How much space does xp take? Mine took 1.89ghz but windows 2k is there but not operational. So, I just delete the winnt folder and modify the boot.ini? Would that take win2k out entirely without it hogging space? I'm curious why not format c:? Is that bad or you mean i don't have to? smelanson 05-10-2002, 10:24 AM If 2000 is the only OS that is installed thgen you can format the C: during the install of XP as long as there is nothing that you want to save on the computers C:, XP takes about 1Gb BipolarBill 05-10-2002, 10:46 AM Gtr...you haven't told us where Win2K and WinXP are installed. Please tell us. Are they on the same partition or different ones? Did you upgrade Win2K to XP and just want to delete the backup files? Please answer both questions. The boot files for both OSes are on the C: drive. If you format C:, you will lose both. smelanson 05-10-2002, 11:13 AM I completely agree with Bipolarbill, we need more information, I am assuming that you have only 2000 on so far, but I could be wrong and it could be a costly mistake. gtr 05-10-2002, 01:06 PM Oh, sorry about that. It's on my laptop and both on drive C. I installed xp over 2k and now it's mixed but only xp works. I changed the setting so xp boots up without asking, but win 2k apparently is taking up space. The computer is empty and i might as well try to get as much hardrive space if i needed it later. And I only have 1 partition. Is their a new format option in xp? I was thinking about formating with win98 boot disk and then installing xp. Is thier a xp boot disk or new and easier way i don't know about BipolarBill 05-10-2002, 01:14 PM Ok....there should be a Windows folder and a WINNT folder on C. WINNT is always Win2K. If you installed Win2K first, WINNT is definitely the folder. Just delete the folder. Open the BOOT.INI file (if it's hidden, you must show hidden files in Explorer > Tools > Folder Options > View. Now locate BOOT.INI on C. Right-click it and select Properties. Uncheck Read Only if it's checked. Click OK. Double-click BOOT.INI now. Remove the "Windows 2000 Professional /fastdetect" line. Save and close. That's it. gtr 05-10-2002, 02:01 PM Ok, thanks. Window folder is the xp stuff and the winnt is the old win2k? BipolarBill 05-10-2002, 02:04 PM Yes. SysOpt.com
