OK folks, here's a little brain teaser for all of the WinME gurus out here.

At one time or another, I'm sure that all of us have gone to the system tools, system information. Well, I've got a little home network I'm working on and it is running like a switch watch. Connectivity is fine, no traffic or bandwidth issues, no problem devices on any of the machines, etc.

Anyway, the other day I was waiting for a download to finish so I just popped into the system information and was browsing around. I looked into the components, problem devices section and was pretty surprised to see "TCP/IP" as a problem device. The error code reported is "error code 22". Selecting this entry provides me with the oh so helpful and informative response "error code 22". Thanks Bill, appreciate that.

So, I decided to poke & prod into this further. I ran every network Q&A test I could possibly think of......no problems or even remotely questionable results. I checked every possible source for a hardware or software conflict or problem, and again, nada, zip zero zilch.

So, I decided I'd go to the source to find out what these error codes are supposedly reporting. The results of this? Well I've been looking the Microsoft's web site for the last 3 days, and the only reference I've located is an article describing a situation where if you are using a PCMCIA card (and the network above is not....) then you may receive an error code 22 and it is safe to ignore.

My question to all of you is this, do ANY of you have any idea, or preferably a link, to the definitions of these error codes?

I mean if MS is kind enough to provide this information, wouldn't it make a little bit of sense that they would also provide us with a mechanism to decipher its meaning?

the definitions are out there in MS land somewhere. I saw them once or twice while looking up a code of my own. I seem to remember that error code 22 is not a critical one tho.

sorry couldnt be more help.

Buji & Savage,

Thanks for the replies, I really appreciate your input. However, I must not have been clear in my original post.

These error codes are not presented in either an illegal operation, or in device manager. Device Manager has no stops, warnings, or error codes of any type whatsoever. In other words, at first blush, this system/network is as perfect as can be.

The error is being shown ONLY after going into the System Information section (Start, Accessories, System Tools) and then expanding "Components" and then selecting "Problem Devices".

As I mentioned, in Device Manager itself, there is zip, zilch zero problems, yet here it is showing TCP/IP as not having started (if that is in fact the definition of Error Code 22). If this were the case, then there would be no way to browse either the local network, or the WWW, both of which are operating perfectly fine.

Also, there is no firewall or other security implemented on this network (much to the contrary of my suggestions, but that's another story).

Perhaps this is yet another presentation of an erroneous diagnosis by the OS?

Again, any ideas at this point, no matter how farfetched, would be appreciated.

Thanks Folks!

P.S. Go Sox!!!
