My taskbar always has some "remnant" boxes left on it, either after re-booting or after closing application windows.

All I do to get rid of them is to click once on them, but its a pain sometimes.

Any idea what causes this and what to do to prevent it?

If they are what I'm thinking of, then they are left behind by apps/games/screensavers that run OpenGL.

To test it, run any game that uses OpenGL (like Quake 3, Q2, whatever) and in the game go to the options and change your resolution a few times...every time you change resolution there will be an additional blank box on your Taskbar.

So how to fix it? Don't know. I've experienced this little quirk for a few years now. Since I've first seen it, I've been through 2 video cards, countless driver versions, 2 versions of Windoze, and this same little quirk still persists.

Oh well, it's not really much of a problem. And now that you know what's causing it, maybe it'll be less bothersome. I've never given it much thought.
