Changed? How? Position?

Rebooting will restore icons that have changed in appearance. TweakUI can "repair" icons too.

If your icons have shifted positions, there are freeware programs for saving their positions.

If you don't have this, you should:

http://www.microsoft.com/ntworkstation/downloads/PowerToys/Networking/NTTweakUI.asp

They change because of high memory use. The icons are saved in a "cache". Under severe stress, the system will flush that cache and use it for other things. The icons will sometimes change when they are restored.

If its the standard icons like my computer etc. you can rite clik the desktop and hit properties and go to effects tab you can change those icons from there.

Yes it is. Unfortunately, all of those solutions (other than the registry hack and the F5 trick - which rarely works) require more steps than using Tweak UI > Repair > Repair Icons. Since MS doesn't officially support Tweak UI, they didn't include it in the article as a solution.

I've been using Tweak to fix this problem since '96 and it has never failed me.
