yet another always on thread(i searched first)

hi everyone,i thought i should say i searched first cause i have seen how annoying it can be seeing the same questions over and over...i.e i dont own a duron but i could tell you how to unlock it http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/smile.gif any how,i used to shut down at night seemed pointless to leave it on from 12am till 7pm.but now i want to let it run 24/7.so the should i part isnt the question..in the threads i searched i didnt see the preferences in what to leave running...currently i have shut down monitor after 1 hr..should i shut down hdd as well,or choose stand by?..in bios it says user defined does that mean controlled by windows..or do both windows and bios have to be the same.it just seems alitle confusing with 3 different ways of achieving the same thing.i would just experiment but with my old machine i had some violent screen flickers and actully shut down..and then it didnt offer me stand by anymore.till i reloaded windows..thats why i'm a little leary this time..any advise would be appreciated.
