Hi,
I posted once before on this and tried some things out but it is happening again.
My cable modem connection started freezing my PC about a week after I got it. It forces me to reset/reboot my system. Under no other circumstances does my PC freeze, not even at 45% resources. When I am online I am at 75% free. I switched out the modem. Same thing happens. I just recently switched out the NIC card and reinstalled Charter Comms sw. This seemed to have worked for 4 days. I was surfing just fine. Then yesterday it was freezing every ten minutes. The time online it takes to freeze the pc can be up to an hour but usually less than 30 minutes.
Is it possible that something is happening to the TCP/IP stack that is causing this problem? Can this stack become corrupt from some outside source? I have noticed on the firewall a couple of MAC Spoofing attempts. No viruses in Norton reported. I am running 98 SE with AMD Tbird 1 gig and 512 Ram. Thx

You think? Even though the system runs fine otherwise? I just dread trying to remember all the minor/major driver/game updates I have done over the past 14 months or so.
Or is there a way to do this without blowing out the current apps or Formatting? Thx

You can save your games, but not drivers and tweaks. That's the point of it. You can save your Start Menu and Favorites from the Windows folder. Save your Contacts and E-mail. Back 'em up.
Now boot from the Windows startup floppy and :
DEL C\*.*
DELTREE C:\WINDOWS /Y
DELTREE C:\PROGRA~1\COMMON~1
Now run SETUP.
All your data outside of the Windows folder will remain intact. Your games will probably work fine, but complex programs will need to be reinstalled.

It's time to upgrade to win2k. You can upgrade and save all your apps [well, nearly all of them. There will be some, not many, that win2k won't like]. Win2k is much more stable, and you'll be glad you did. :) Yes, there will be some drivers you'll need to find.
If you still have some dos apps that you want to run, choose the fat32 file system.
Btw, run ZoneAlarm, it keeps the **** holes out. If ur paranoid like me [and you may really have reason to be], also run Jammer.
And Tiny Personal Firewall is free. The 3 get along just fine.
Anti-virus software is primarily just that. For trojans, you'll want The Cleaner.

You can upgrade to win2k, but I wouldnt advise it.
I did this, from Win98, and had nothing but grief. I got so mad in the end when it died that i used the recovery console and formatted. The I put a fresh install of 2K, stright away on. Its been fine now. Fast stable everyhting I want it to be. Win2K rules.
(Upgrading from Win9x means thet there are 2 system folders, a 'Windows' and a 'WINNT'. Taking up valuabl space when the system drive is only 10GB, its my storage HDD thats a big beefy 120GB one lol)

Well, different peeps have different systems, different experiences. My upgrade to win2k from 98se went just fine.
A clean install is gonna wipe out so much data/apps that's it worth it to try the upgrade first.
My 2cents.
If it doesn't work, ur not going to be any worse off than doing a clean install.

Best of both worlds - install (New Installation) Win2K to the C drive if there's room and then just delete the Windows folder. All programs, data and paths remain.

Ya, you should upgrade, see if its all okay. If you get annoyed, just load up the recovery console, and format amd re-install.
Thats exactly what I did, and my Install is sweeeeeeeeeeeeet :D
Win2K Rules.

Before replacing your os try this first re-install your W98se but during installation ,install it in the same folder as before or else you will lost your hardware driver ,etc.
