First of all, be sure the chip is really reversed. On the top surface at one end of the chip is a semicular notch or some other way to differentiate the pin-1 end. There should be a corresponding notch on the socket itself, or perhaps silk-screened in white right on the motherboard.

If you do need to remove the chip, make sure you completely unplug the power supply from the electrical outlet first. You can get an inexpensive chip puller from an electronics store like Radio Shack. If not, you can use a small thin flat-blade screwdriver to pry one end of the chip out of the socket slightly, and then alternate from one end of the chip to the other in small steps. In short, you "rock" it up and out.

Be careful when reinserting the chip. It's quite easy for one of the "spider legs" to miss the corresponding hole in the socket, causing it to fold or roll under.

P.S. -- BIOS chips are very sensitive to static.

P.P.S. -- Don't ever call someone who puts a BIOS chip in backwards a "tech" again. ;)
