Recently, my system has developed a strange behavior at startup:

The hourglass for desktop load takes takes much longer than it did, and once the mouse pointer appears there is still a long delay before I can open folders or applications. Once they do open there is another long delay before the application is ready to use or items in the folder can be selected. This behavior does not seem to be present, once the system has been running a while.

I have the latest Norton updates virus scan is negative - I also ran their Web based Active X virus scan - system resources are at 86 to 95 % - there are no unusual programs running. One thing though, while these delays are happening Close Program shows Msgsrv32 and Navapw32 are not responding.

My system:

What version of Windows?

Navapw32 is part of Norton's and might be one of your problems with a long boot if it's not responding.

I'm not sure what Msgsrv32 is, but you can search for it on your HDD to see what folder it's in and figure it out. Enter msgsrv*.* so that you'll get a listing of all files similar to this. Make sure you check the search parameters to make sure you're searching in System and Hidden folders.

Well Msgsrv32 look like some Mesenger Service or similar. Type MSConfig in Run in start menu. Go to startup tab and see what programs r listed there. Uncheck the unnes ones. Leave thing like U can uncheck all of them but leave the one which r important 4 u. Like reg, norton antivirus, systray(not important), task moniter(enable only if u use it) Other things can be disabled like messenger, agent etc.
Try this it will solve ur problem.

Hello
I have recently had this same problem with the last Norton update.
I was told that with the recent virus attacks that Norton scans start up/system files a little more thoroughly, that's why it takes so long on boot.

be well

Try using windoctor (norton utilities). This will search and correct problems that cause freezing, applications to not run correctly, registry...
It's a good one.

Also , defragment your hard drive. This will make applications to run faster. Also, disable all programs that you won't need them to load on startup (via MSCONFIG) because they take ressources.
Hope this will help.

1. "What version of Windows?" -
System is Win98 SE.

2. "I have recently had this same problem with the last Norton update"
The last update but one did download several large Norton system updates for Systemworks 2002. What is your source for this info. Is there a Norton Article?

3. "Msgsrv32 look like some Mesenger Service or similar"
Will try unchecking unnes. ones

4. "Try using windoctor (norton utilities)"
Did this - Norton says "No Prob. But thanks!

5. "Also , defragment your hard drive" - Did this too: I defrag frequently. Again Thanks!

Thanks to all for the responses.
