Hello,
I have 256mb of ram. And on regular windows operation, it seems that the hdd is working hard! Example is when I play winamp, each time i open a program (icq, IE, etc...) causes the musci to jitter. It never happen before. Is there a way that I can adjust the memory? I've set the pagefile to 128-128 on another drive.
Thanks.

Bring up Task Manager while this is happening and watch memory utilization. This may not be swap file usage.
I find that 256MB is fine for Win2K. Set your page file to 260/260 and try cleaning up the Startup menu of unneeded stuff. You can use MSCONFIG.EXE from Windows XP:

MSCONIFIG is indispensable for Win2K. Do you think MS might include it in the next service pack?
Nah!

Um...double-click it? There will be a Startup tab and a Services tab where you should look. There are many more than those three starting - trust me. Win2K doesn't work like Win9x. Startup items and Services are stored in the Registry and the All Users account besides your own Startup group.
Things to delete are Real Networks trash, Winamp startup app (you don't need it), download managers and other silly stuff.

More memory, I guess. You could also leave ICQ open or hide it.

huh? 256mb is not enuf? it's only when icq or any other software that opens that causes the stuttering. After it's open, everything returns to normal.

This is a small thing. They do make stereo systems for playing music you know.
If you're playing music that requires decompression (MP3s), you may indeed be going to swap file. Open Task Manager and watch the Performance tab memory usage while opening. Also watch CPU usage.

Well the cpu usage spikes up each time I open something. The memory stays horizontal.... any thoughts O Wise One? :)

You asked for it, Grasshopper. I suggest either dual CPUs or a 2.2Ghz Northwood P4 OCed to 3Ghz! I also suggest (at lower cost) keeping ICQ running and status invisible. :p
