First time I've seen this: :(

I went to install Win2000 Pro on a re-formated hard drive:

- K6-III 450MHZ w/ 256 RAM
- Giga-Byte 5AX MB
- Samsung 6GB HD
- Dimmond 4MB Video AGP

I pulled all the cards out accept the AGP Video. I can start the install fine (blue screen) up untill it says its starting win2000 setup. Then it re-boots itself. The next step should be asking me about which format I want (FAT32 or NTFS).

I have the latest Bios and have tried earlier versions as well. I have also tried switching the video card from another win2000 pro computer. Still re-boots. I have let it re-boot it's self three or more times in a row.

I'm starting to think the MB is not win2000 compatable! Because the only other thing could be the hard drive, but that doesn't make sense.

Thanks all,

Fuzzy Z

Try updating your BIOS or just press F5 when you first get a blue screen. When prompted, select "Standard PC".

Make sure you've done the F6 thing and loaded 3rd party storage drivers(Promise, Highpoint) too.

Thanks for the help BipolarBill :D

I was using the latest Bios as well as I tried previous versions. But I did not know about the F5 command and choosing standard pc. I'm happy to report, I have bypassed by problem and am currently formating to NTFS.

One question thoe, what did the F5 command do? Why do you think it solved my problem? Thanks again!

Spoke Too Soon! :(

I got my drive formated to NTFS and the files copied over fine. Then it does a re-boot and I get the bar loading and it completes, then I'm back to it re-booting. It will continue to do this over & over again (loop) until I shut off the computer. I tried differnet RAM and only putting in one 64MB chip. Could it be my hard drive, or do you think its my motherboard?

Thanks,

The F5 thing is for manually selecting your HAL (hardware abstraction layer). Win2K more often than not defaults to ACPI and some older BIOS have bad ACPI implementation.

I think the motherboard and Win2K don't like each other much, frankly. I did find one link:

Not exactly what you're looking for, I'm afraid, but worth a look.
