Well, my friend bought his 40Gb hdd to my home to transfer some data. I attach it in the cable i used for CDROM. The drive didnot get reconized. Tried each and every thing which was possible. The computer starts all the time but BIOS does not detects any thing. I even place his hdd as primary master with no other IDE drive. But drive did not get reconized. Tried all jumper seting. Then used Limit to 32GB jumper. Drive reconized by BIOS and WinXP but no drive displayed in my computer. In device manger it shows that the media is unreconizable.
I think it is a BIOS problem. Till i know there was a limit for 8GB hdd long time back. But is there any 32GB limit also.
I have a 20GB hdd working fine. What can be the problem. Is there any different kid of cable for ATA 100 drive. I m not sure about his HDD is ATA100 or not. Model no. ST340823A.
What can be the problem.

You will need an 80 pin Ultra ATA cable.

where did he get it at? If it was a store, return it. To me it kinda sounds like a 1.bad drive, or 2. incorrect format (Like it was formated for Linux, Unix,....) or it could be like you said an ATA 100 hd or ATA 66 etc...

Harshu, As Bob05 stated does your friends HD have the same type OS on it, if it doesn't have the same type OS on it,it probably won't work and before doing to much to the HD reset it back the way it was so your friend can still use it his or hers computer.
If your OS is compatible with your friends OS, say Win95 or newer you might try using a Direct Cable Connection. It can be found in Win95, from your desktop, My Computer, Control Panel, Windows Setup Add/Remove Programs Properties, Communications, Direct Cable Connection.
You will need a Direct Connect Parallel Port Cable, you should be able to find one at a computer store, just tell them what you are trying to do. After setting up the program on both computers follow the directions you should able to transfer information from your friends computer to yours.:)

The Os on that HDD is WinXP and 98 (I have WinXP and WinME). My HDD is ATA66. I have told him to brought the Cable of his HDD. So i can try. But u people r sure that there is no such limit of 32GB in the BIOS just likt it was for 8GB some yrs ago.

We can't be sure there's no limit unless we know the make and model of motherboard, Harshu. He can always use the Western Digital Data Lifeguard Tools - but the drive must be recognized.

There may well be a limit on a 440ZX board. Try using Seagates tools to prepare the drive:
http://www.seagate.com/support/disc/drivers/
You can also use a Promise IDE controller to get full use of almost any IDE drive:

It sounds like you want to upgrade your BIOS in order to use your friends HD. Try going to www.wimsbios.com and click on the Bios Agent maybe they can help you.:)
