What processor are you running. An Athlon or a Duron?

If you are wanting to overclock your system, try adjusting the FSB in the bios.

You should be able to change your FSB in the Bios or with dip switches on the motherboard. HOWEVER, since you've never done this before, I'd highly recommend reading up on overclocking before doing anything. OC'ing is a great way to fry a cpu and do damage to your system. Here's a good link that will explain the basics. It's for Socket A processors, but it discusses the basics of overclocking.

Also, if you go to www.overclockers.com, they have some good tips on checking for stability. Finally, overclocking is at your own risk, so be careful. Have fun though.

can i reply to my own reply???
IS it better to spend $$ on another cpu (I found a 900mhx for $49 as a back-up to frying) and play a little in the overclocking arena,or buy another / real mobo with info and upgrading room...
or just scrap the slot a cpu mobo combo & go a whole new route completely???

What kind of motherboard do you have. If I can know that info I will try and find what kind of processor you can put in it.

If you have the latest BIOS you can put an Athlon T'bird 1.4 GHz in it. If you don't have the newest BIOS then you can only put in a regualr athlon, not a t'bird.

I thought a plain Athlon was a slot processor. While a T'bird is a socket processor. Oh well.. I would suggest that you overclock some and save up enough dough to buy a really nice rig and then you won't have to play any silly little games. (haha look at me talking with my little P3 450 Katmai!!!!:D ) I don't think that your gonna be able to o'c with that gateway mobo because I can't with my gateway mobo.
