On XP machines, all the root directories of all the drives are shared with names as follows:
ADMIN$ = Windows Directory
C$ = C:\ Drive
D$ = D:\ Drive
etc
and a few more.
These are all password protected. It does not use the admin password or any of the account passwords. Why does it do it? Clearly to provide a backdoor to M$. Why else would it hide the shares, and password protect them?

Anyone know what the password is?

Only local Administrators can access default shares. If you're not logged on as one, you are prompted for a password. If your password is not an Admin password, no go.

NT has used this system for years. It's not considered a vulnerability. If you have admin privileges, you can wreak havoc any old way.
