Just installed win2kpro and now my 56k US robotics external sportster modem wont work! Went to USR site they claim that 2k already has the drivers which I believe since ME does. Anyhow I checked the modem through diagnostics and the modem is wroking proprly, but when I go to dial up it says the modem isnt installed??? Yet when testing I see the modem lights blink and it reports its fine. I'm at a total loss here! The com ports are working so whats up? Any ideas before I snap this disk in half? 2k is useless without the .net, I'm truely scruged here! Thanx in advance to any replys! Peace!

Well it seems it must nbe winders! I installed a cheap conexant modem and got the same effect. Ports are ok under device listing same with irq.'s and the modem tests O.K. but yet when dialing it says there is no modem installed. What part of windows would do this, where to start? This is my first time running win2k and I have no idea how to fix this. Any help or ideas apreceated!:)

Leave both modems installed and repair Win2K. Boot from the CD and select Setup > Legal ****(F8) > Repair. Don't choose Recovery Console and don't select ERD.

Thanks, I'm gonna try that right now and let you know what happens! The thing I noticed was under the control panel it doesnt show the M$ dial up adapter. The one under system>network adapters>Dial-up adapter, it isnt there at all and I cant install it throught the add new hardware wizrd either. The modems are there but not Dial-up adapter. I picked add new device>blah>blah> but when I get to the network adaptors the only one under microsoft is loopback or something. What am I missing? Should it be there and its not? I know if ME or any 9x is missing that it wont connect to the .net at all. Is this the same deal on 2k? Thanx BipolarBill!:)

I'll try that too. Right now its in the middle of the repair. Will be done in a minute and I'll let you know what happens. To add the
Dial-Up adapter and TCP/IP I go through control panel> add new hardware wizard right? this setup is a little dif than what I'm used to. Thanx for the help, your a life saver! Peace.:)

Alright, I restored as you said. Then I tried to dial, same error.
Went to add new prog's>add win components>selected simple tcp/ip network. Said successfully completed.

I then right clicked my dial-up under networking and TCP/IP is their now and so is client for M$ networks, I have both checked and it still wont find either modem. The device managers find them though when running test. I guess it must be in the windows DUN somehow. Should Dial-up adapter appear under the network adapter in system manager like on '98? I mean it still needs it right? Im confused big time on this one?

I'm going to have to boot to Win 2K and look. Gimme some time.

Offhand, I can tell you that you right-click My Network Places and use Create a new Connection to actually make a Dial-up account.

Oh...don't forget to reapply SP2 after the repair.

In Win2K now...establishing a new account with some local geeks. Will follow up.

----------------------------------------

Ok...right-click the Dial-up and select Properties. Be sure that you have selected a functioning modem to use. Clean up defunct modem drivers in Control Panel > Phone and Modem. You may want to visit Safe Mode and open Device Manager. There, select View > Show hidden devices and clean up the junk.

The "local geek" suggested removing all dial-up accounts and starting over, using INETWIZ.EXE. He suggested not doing it manually. I don't know - I like manual myself. ;)

I did that now and I still am getting same prob. The modem functions, all ports are O.K. but yet dial-up cant find the modem. Its there listed under propeties for my dial up but when it says opening port it comes back with error 797 failure to find modem or other connecting device. I noticed theres a scratch on this disk. I got it off E-bay so its used. Could there be a missing file due to the scratch? Is there a way to find out what one and replace the file on Win2k? Somethings not right at all. I apreciate your help and time. Any other ideas are welcome. By the way what do you connect with? Is it dial-up? If so is there a dial up adaptor listed under device manager? My modem is there but not the dial-up adaptor under network adaptors like in '98/ME. Should it be there? Is this a sign of whats wrong? Help!

I think your modem is bad. I had zero trouble setting up my Diamond external just now. I use cable normally.Could there be a missing file due to the scratch? You should be able to download the drivers easily. That's not an issue.By the way what do you connect with? Is it dial-up? I have dial-up for backup when RR has "router troubles". If so is there a dial up adaptor listed under device manager? My modem is there but not the dial-up adaptor under network adaptors like in '98/ME. No sir. That was ME. Win2K is a whole new bag.

Frankly I think you got hosed on the modem. :(

The thing is though when I connect the modem to my other machine it works. Plus it worked before this on the same machine with ME. I also tried my other cheapy pci modem and get the same prob. So maybe its the scratch on the win2k disk? The modem drivers are working also cause I used the diagnosis and it reports OK and the modem lights flash as its supposed to. The scratch is kinda looking like bad news I guess.:(

This is all very odd. I'm thinking that the Com port or the Com port drivers are bad. Go into BIOS setup and try changing the resources for the serial port.

I just reset the seriel ports to all posible configs under bios and tried diableing PnP aswell. Its still the same. Only thing I can figure is something in widows is fudged up.:(

If you're up to it, reinstall clean and leave all externals disconnected 'till you're done. Apply SP2 before installing the modem.

I'll give that a try. I just broke out the old seagate 6gig so I can leave winME on this one and fool with that one. After haveing a 1500mhz machine running that 600mhz celeron to log on sysopt is almost painfull!. I have the sp2 patch right here so its def. worth a try. I'll try in that order, remove modem from seriel port, install 2kpro, then run patch, then install the modem. Thanx for all the help so far! I'll let you know what happens!:)

Well after some more checking I have a thought on it. First off if I remove the modem and run dial up I get the same error. So it is like its not hooking up with the modem driver.

Now when installing '98 before the ME upgrade I noticed my soundcard had actually caused a similar prob. in '98 untill I changed the irq settings. So I'm thinking of removeing the SBLive card untill I get 2k setup and try it. Let you know what happens!:)

I had some kind of similar problem with my Conexant PCI Modem, i tried all kinds of stuff, like using it on different PCI slots but it won't work then i tried the last option that is reinstalling evry **** thing from scratch , it worked though but i would have liked to know what the problem was.

perhaps the drivers are crappy....

since it has happenned to me twice. The first time when i tried using Tweak UI to disable showing 'My Network places', all of a sudden after the next reboot the modem did not work. then when some how i did manage to get that done all of a sudden one fine day it just stopped dialin giving out errors like "cannot find modem" though when queried upon it did give out those supported AT strings and other stuff.

With Windows i suppose its always "reinstall" that most of the time guarantees that a problem gets solved.

Though the modem worked fine in WMe and linux.
