I don't know where these virus damage figures come from. But as I recall, the Melissa virus, other than e-mailing itself elsewhere, didn't particularly cause any damage. It didn't mess with any files.

The author of the most damaging virus, the Chernobyl, was give a job by the Taiwan government! In was in the Taiwan Army at the time of writing the virus!

Where did you find that Chernobyl was the "most damaging" virus. It might be interesting to list the top 10 viruses of all time...

It is my opinion that the Chernobyl virus is the most damaging. Whether or not anyone else agrees is their business.

The Chernobyl virus goes after your hardware, starting with your BIOS. It will kill each and every hard drive in your computer. So if you own a brand name computer, you're going to have to chuck the thing!

Inequality of consequence is the name of the American Justice system. Where in the world can you steal millions of dollars in a white collar crime and get sent to 1-5 yrs in prison. Now compare this to the person who robs a liquor store with a gun and gets away with $200, but gets sent to prison for 15 -25 yrs. The first person most likely ruined many people’s lives by stealing their life’s saving. The armed robber, most likely, ruins no one's life, but gets a disproportionately harsher sentence. Who did the most damage to society? Hackers and virus creators can cause millions of dollars in damage; they should be prosecuted with the zeal that sends a mesage: This behavior will not be tolerated.

(I am not advocating armed robbery. These people should be kept off the streets, but so should the equally calloused soul who steals from trusting people.)

It's so terrible when my father feels depress because his computer has a virus. This SOB's should go to jail for life, so much headcaches they cause.

I think you're all nuts. I don't think virus creators whould be jailed at all. If network security staff can't do their job, that's their problem. Af far as innocent people being frustrated at home goes...they need to stop downloading ****/using MS products.

I think viruses are funny. I crack up when I get 3 e-mails a day from people who have one email virus or another that sends itself to me. I jsut reply and tell em to scan their comp.

So stop crying and learn to back important things up.

Oleg.

I get to deal with id10ts every day who blithely click away on every attachment they get and then cry like two year olds when their machines get infected. Recently I had a user open the Klez worm which managed to turn off his virus protection. He then opened a host of other email attachments and infected our network by backing up a bunch of his files onto a network directory. He got a free format c: courtesy of me for his troubles.

If people drove cars the way they operate their computers there would be death and mayhem everywhere.

On one side I don't have much patience for fools who are too lazy to think for themselves. On the other hand I am one of the shmutzes who get to go around cleaning up after those idiots.

So, to all you virus writers out there: could you take it easy on the idiots? It's driving me nuts having to clean up after them all the time.

Your obviously not from my kneck of the woods are you. Its just dumb people, there will always be fools and those who prey on them. Its a never ending cycle I'm afraid. Makes our lives more painfull but yet more meaningfull aswell. If there werent viruses or hardware prob.s or glitches in the O.S. then alot of us smart people would be out of a job now wouldnt we! Go dummys!

Imagine what would happen if nobody ever wrote a virus and MSFT never needed to issue 129,558,947,429 updates to try and combat them and then one day someone did?

Unfortunately, immature and narcissist personalities pervade the American culture. How more readily could one assert, "I am a force to be reckoned with" than to plant a pipe bomb or a computer virus. The real problem is that the cultural nuances of our society leave one feeling empty and without worth. We are spiritual beings socialized into the cultural nuance that material things are the only things of value. I am glad, when I hold my daughter and she says "I love you too daddy" That is the essence of what gives my life meanig .

These virus initiators aren't cute any more. There was a time when personal computers were considered to be playthings of the rich and geeks. So most people didn't care about them because it didn't affect them. Now that there is a personal computer, if not two, in most homes, people view it as destruction of their property.

BTW, Chernobyl is making the rounds again.

BTW...anti virus software sucks. Irecommend switching to Dr. Web from www.dials.ru Russians write the best viruses, makes sense that they also write the best AV software. No, i dont work there. But I do use it. Check out their Adinf and Dr. Web progs.
