Hi,

I have a PII 350 motherboard and am in the market for a better video card. I have a good old Riva TNT.

My motherboard includes an AGP slot, in which the card is plugged, but it is old technology. New cards at which I am looking are all AGP2 or 4.

Has anybody tried plugging an AGP4 card in an AGP slot ?

Thanks in advance,
Francois Beausoleil

May or may not work. AGP 4x-only cards won't work, and won't fit (security notch).

Mixed mode 4x-or-2x cards will fit, but since the power supplied to the AGP slot is much more limited on older boards, you should aim low on the new card's specifications. Rule of thumb, anything with a fan on is asking for trouble.

1x 2x 4x AGP.....

Radeon8500 Usually are.
Even GTS 2Ultra's that is a great card!!

Mind the power issue ... Radeon 8500 or Geforce 2 is too much.

I'd go with and older GTS 2 for a weak system.... They are great cards and take the load off the system "GTS 2Ultra"

I've got an old gigabyte GA-6VXE+ (VIA Apollo Pro) motherboard and a Pixelview Geforce2 MX 64MB in it...have had problems ever since I got it. One of the reasons I got it was for it's overclockability...haven't been able to do it without the computer hanging. Even now, unclocked I get funny little dots over the screen from time to time. Think I either sell this card and go back to old Riva TNT or get a new MOBO...anybody have any ideas as to a good motherboard which will keep me going for a few years, not too pricey and supports the Geforce2 MX and is overclockable??

Thanks for your help,

DABSON, yeah right. Brilliant. Do that and you'll toast something. AGP 4x is 1.5V, AGP 2x is 3.3V. If the card doesn't detect-and-switch depending on what the mainboard does, you'll either blow the card or the mainboard.

why not get one of the GeForce 4 MX 420 - 460 Cards, they're made for older systems basically, and are a great upgrade, put one in a friends, p3 500 and i runs sooo smoothly not only programs, but 3d games, and the whole computer is werking better he's went from 5 to 10 times a day of BSOD and Crashing and having to restart and hasen't restarted once in the last 2 months or any BSOD!!! so i think that was the greatest improvement to him!!

I had a RivaTNT on my old P2-266. Upgraded to a Gef256 SDR. World of difference! This would be a very cheap upgrade for you.

Keep in mind, there's a big difference between a P2 and P3 CPU. I feel you'll have to go with a older board. Unless you plan to upgrade soon.

Gotta go, big storm comin' in. Catch ya' later.

You see hear in CANADA the stor puts it in for you... They have experts that check these things ....and if something is defective then they just take it out and pop in a new one....That's it trouble free.....:p

If they toast your board that's not going to be trouble free, either way. Better know your stuff before entering the shop, chances are that the folks in there don't.

Most of the new cards that are @ 4x AGP do usually support 1x and 2x. But it don't mean all do, just read the box/manual. If not have a look on the manufacturers website, that should tell you.
