Hi,

I'm having a stupid issue.

I have an Scientific Atlanta cable modem with a 4 port linksys router. I
have 3 computer set up on it (comps have static IP's) for the past 6 months
and everything was working perfectly.

Last week, I wasn't able to browse on any other computers and figured out it
was actually an issue with the router. It wouldn't pick up an WAN IP.
After some fiddling, I definied a WAN MAC address and it started working
again.

NOW every 2 hours or so I need to release and renew dhcp......This is a big
pain.

My questions are: 1 - What defines the lease time? Is there any way of
changing that? What can I do so that I don't have release & renew everyday?
The mac address is used on the router is from my laptop and I only seem to
be able to refresh it from there but i don't keep it on 24/7? I tried
putting the MAc address from another card and it won't let me refresh.

How can I fix this?
Thanks in advance.

Jane

DHCP leases last however long that the DHCP server specifies. It depends on your ISP.

I have "cooked" one Linksys router. They don't last forever and need good ventilation.

For some reason, your router is losing it's client status too often. It wouldn't hurt to check the config.

Try using a paper clip in the Reset hole and updating the firmware - not necessarily in that order.

I did reset it before but that made no difference. And I was planning on upgrading firmware, so cool, I'll do that.

Another question, would it make a difference if I had it all set up as dhcp? And any ideas why the router would not be picking up a WAN IP by itself?

Burning a router? After 6 months? seems kinda harsh.....

Thanks for the reply.

would it make a difference if I had it all set up as dhcp? Maybe, but it shouldn't. And any ideas why the router would not be picking up a WAN IP by itself? The router may be releasing the IP address on it's own. The DHCP server is being stubborn about renewing it so soon. ISPs are like that.Burning a router? After 6 months? seems kinda harsh..... Well, I use my stuff. :p
