just what type of linux OS do you have on your system? are you using red hat , SuSe, etc??? which version is best recommendable for first time users? i think i'll install one soon.

try that gimp program for linux, if you are into graphics.

like I said, I have mandrake 7.2 on it, running your basic stuff so far, Konqueror, netscape, Gaim, Licq, and thats about all I've used so far (I've had it about a day so far, before that I had slackware it doesn't have any auto configuration of stuff, and very little configuration tools. which makes it good to learn, as it makes YOU do stuff)

I'm using Mandrake 7.2 on 4 systems and just love it. I bought the complete (not Deluxe) package) and the only additional program/ game I have so far snagged was the full version of "Raptor" the demo is on the CDs. But for Raptor you will need to upgrade to the latest SDL (simple direct medial layer) I'm using 1.1.6..

Star Office and GIMP (included) do most everything I need.

Have you checked out gFTP? It puts "CuteFTP" to shame and best of all - no spyware! One thing I didn't like about 7.2 is that I had to install the regular command line FTP separately.

yea I think it's great, my freind just bought it for me (powerpack deluxe version) haven't had a need for ftp -yet, I probably will. staroffice I've used a bit, and actually have almost enough ram for it to run tolerably, should have enough soon http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/smile.gif GIMP I haven't used yet. But I'm quite happy to have aim and icq clients now!!! incidentally, which irc client works best?

What modem are you using with mandrake 7.2 I just installed it and I'm having to use my windows partition to get on the net with cause I cant get the modem set up. (I know its a hareware modem the add I bought it from said NON-WIN Modem..) So far I love Linux!

actually, I am not using a modem in the mandrake box, it connects through my slackware box which has ip masquerade set up, and HAD a US robotics 56k modem, but since the phone company did something to the lines that FRIED it (yea it was on a surge supressor) it's back to an ancient 28.8 I've had for about 6? years (phone company says it's not their problem they destroyed my property)

I use KDE mostly for convienance, not for speed. Gnome is very appealing too - choices, choices...

AbiWord and any of the "K-office" stuff run much faster than Star Office but they are not as full featured and have some pesky bugs.

I don't irc - no time really, used aim a little in Linux but only had time for an occasional message.

DK - Modems: It is always best to set up your internal, non-winmodem, to non-plug-n-play with jumpers and set COM port and IRQ manually - I usually set things to COM2 (2f8 I/O)& IRQ3 then I just disable the onboard COM2 from BIOS (if applicable).

In Linux this should translate to /dev/ttys1

Mostly I use external modems on COM1.

I was asking about irc for the scheduled sysopt chat parties
