Anyone know how to log on to Windows 2000 (pro, on a lan) to which the operator forgot (?) the password, without overwriting the Windows directory? To make things worse, (or at least more difficult) it's on an NTFS partition, I don't know how to boot to a command line since I need the Admin password to use the recovery console.......

Sorry. :(

If there was a back door for logging on to Win2K, the logon process would be rather lame, wouldn't it?

If you can extract the SAM file, you're 20% of the way there. If you want to try, you can parallel-install another instance of Win2k and recover the file that way. Most of the helper apps are not freeware, unfortunately.

Thanks Bpb, but I yanked the drive out and connected it to my XP machine and cleared the Administrator password. (Thank goodness for the Sysopt archives and search engine!)

I searched the forums for "lost password" and found this in one thread:

I found the fix in the reply by AMMOK, worked like a charm.

(Of course, the user profile had to be recreated and data copied from the corrupt profile to the new one)

Kewlio! That Ammok! Hehe...

The hard drive swap was your idea, eh? Good one. You're lucky to have another WinNT machine handy (as I am).

I must admit that I didn't know that simply deleting the SAM files would let you in. I know now. ;) You'll forgive me if I don't try this at home under "normal" circumstances.
