You want to use the Backpack's case for the HP? Thats would be different, I have a Backpack 32X also though wo sound and I think the drive inside mine is made by Teac. It would seem like a long shot to me but you never know till you try.

I looked at the product info and I dont see any reason why this wont work (swapping out your cd-rom with the backpack). You didnt say what OS you are running so just make sure that you have the latest version of driver for it www.micro-solutions.com/software_library/index.html (http://www.micro-solutions.com/software_library/index.html) (pnp3023.exe) As far as your HP burner can you be a little more specific as to the problem? Have you tried using the power plug for your existing cd? If that still doesnt work, try installing it in another pc to make sure that it (hp) isnt bad. Make sure that you have auto-select in your BIOS for whatever channel that you are plugging into and that you have the correct jumper settings on it.i.e. 2nd master or slave. My HP burner(9110i) likes to be set as 2nd master with my cd as 2nd slave. I also had to set both to mode 4 and disable UDMA support. This doesnt apply in every case however so you might have to experiment. The last thing to address is what software you will be using to burn cd's with. I had nothing but problems with the included Adaptec software so I switched over to Nero and I have been happy ever since! Hope this helps a little bit. If you have any other questions, just post.Good luck, steve http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/smile.gif
EDIT: I wonder if I missed the entire point of his post? If I did, disregard everything

OK I has solved my power problems. It turns out it was a bad power supply.
I have replaced the cdrom from the backpack with my 8200i cdrw. Everything seems ok on bootup and I can view the contents of a cdrom in the drive. However, whenever I try to execute a file in the cdrw, I recieve a memory error which states that I do not have enought memory. THis error does not occur when I use the 32x cdrom in the backpack.
I have installed the latest driver and done many things with software to try to solve the problem.
I am running a Piii 500, asus p3bf, asus v3800 video, 128meg ram, sb live value.
Is there a hardware problem that just won't allow me to do this transformation? If so, what could it be?
thanks, McBain
