hi, I have a little comp here that's not liking me at all, here's the trouble

system:
500 celery
win 98se
mobo: M6SBA ver 1.4
64 meg ram pc100
12 gig Hdd SAMSUNG 1.5 gigs used 10.5 free

i reformatted this system about 6 months ago, it wouldn't even boot at that time.

When i received this computer to work on (or to look at) it was booting and would always say this at the final step "not enough memory to run program bla bla ......" each boot would produce a different message telling of a different program it didn't have enough memory to run . Here's what I've done so far

start\run\type :msconfig

I closed down all start up items except system tray ,Rnnap, explore, one other i can't remember. But it still booted saying not enough memory. Also it will not use the modem it has installed, it is saying that the modem is being used by another application, I installed another modem and when i went in to look at the port it was a ps2mouse useing a com port .

I was going to reformat this thing again, what do you think?

I think of virus. Reformat and reinstall can be a good idea, and it's generally fixes everything :)

Virus is what i had on my mind but i also think it mobo because its like it cant detect anything pluged into the pci slots i just put in an AWE64 sound card the lasst time i reformated it, and it seems its not working right . And the owner is a big seller on ebay so it is ussd for internet purposes. when i got thecomputer 6 months ago i thought the HDD was gone because after the energy star screen it would say system inoperable bla bla bla . mainly it was saying I'm FUBAR oh,yea onboard video on this pc also

I'd reformat and start clean. Get a virus checking program on as soon as possible. I just got bit, again, a few days ago.

Other than jsut saying to reformat and run antivirus software.Did you check your virtual Memery settings and make sure it has windows manage it or you can set the MIN and MAX levels by multiplying the total amount of ram by 2.5 or 3. Take that number and use it in the MIN and MAX.

Hi, yes i have tried the virtual memory and windows is doing that ,also tried changing it myself ,still no luck .. one other thing scandisk will not work neither will defrag. scandisk says "scandisk has restarted ten times ,check to see if a program is being writtin to the disk and restart scandisk". defrag only runs up to 10% then it starts over. the modem tell me when i try to connect to see if its installed correctly or is the phone line pluged in. really its just very srewy .. tough from this side...

I worked on a Dell not too long ago with that exact behavior. I reformated the thing, tried different HD's etc. One day I tried changing the system battery and bam, that was it. It's worked fine ever since. It's kind of odd because the BIOS will auto-detect the hardware at start-up so it seems fine but will not run a program and does not give any messege as to the problem.

Hope that works for you
