I have just installed Windows XP on one of four computers on a peer-to-peer network. The others are Windows 2K, Windows 98, and Windows ME. The XP used to have W2K and networked just fine.
The main problem now lies within the XP and 98 computers. They both have the same workgroup, I have checked that. I can ping the XP from the 98 but cannot ping the 98 from the XP. I connected a different 98 computer to the network and can ping that one.
I am using CAT5 cable on a Netgear Switch. I can ping and print to a network printer from either computers.
Must be something simple I am overlooking but I am not a network guy and cannot find it. Any good publications you can recommend?

I have used the referenced site and it is a good one. However, I have one lingering problem. The Windows XP, W2k Pro, and Windows ME all see each other and work well. I have a remaining Windows 98 computer that just refuses to get recognized by the rest of the network.
I does, however, communicate with a network printer. I have remove Net Buei out of all computers and am using only TCP/IP as suggested. I can ping all computers from the Windows 98 computer but cannot ping the W98 computer from any others. Any final suggestions??

If the Win98 PC can ping the others, but not the reverse, there's a firewall blocking incoming connections - or just ICMP packets.

You were absolutely correct. I removed the Norton Personal Firewall and can now see all computers. I have having just a little trouble printing to a printer connected to the XP computer.
However, why did the Norton Personal Firewall not affect the network when NetBeui was installed?? I could see all computers then.

Since NETBEUI is strictly a LAN protocol, it's exempted from firewalling. In other words, it's harmless, so it's left alone.
Describe the printer problem.

I have a HP2000C attached to the Windows XP computer. This connection works just fine. However, I am trying to access it from the Windows 98 computer we just made active on the network by removing the firewall. The Windows 98 computer sees the printer just fine but when I load drivers onto the 98 computer and try to print a test page, it seems the drivers are either bad or loaded incorrectly.
They are the drivers for Windows 98 and I assumed since I was loading onto a Windows 98 computer, they should work just fine. We had to download drivers for the XP computer. I thought the XP just acted as a pass through but maybe I have to load the XP drivers on the 98 computer.
By the way, you offer a suberb service. I really appreciate all of your help. Couldn't survive without it.
