K6-2 400MHz (512KB) 64MB 6GB HDD IDE PCI/ISA Microtwr(3X4) SiS530 40X CD 56K Win98

this is the info about my machine i got from ibm, my problem is that my display seems way too wide for my screen and i cant get it to slim down with the buttons on the monitor. when i open an explorer window i cant see either end of the page so i cant minimize the page or see the X to close it it or press the file button. On the taskbar i cant see the start button or the clock or anything. Someone said it could be a driver problem and that i should update. Some of the buttons work like i can move the screen up or down and side to side, when i do that the edges of the pages have an inward curve to them. i updated to directX a few days ago but i was having the same probs before then. I hope you can understand this garble.

I had a monitor that did that. It needed repairing. Restarting the monitor sometimes helped.

One thing you can try is changing the refresh rate down. In Win98, right-click the desktop and select Properties. Go to the Settings tab and then Advanced. On the Adapter tab, change the refresh rate to 70Hz or less. If you see no refresh dialog, make sure that you have the right monitor drivers.

this is what is says my driver is:

manufacturer: SiS
chip: 530 Rev A2
DAC: internal
Memory: 8MB
Features: direct draw 1.00
Files: SiS 530v.drv, *vdd, sis530v, dd 530.32dll
Version: 4

i have no idea what any of this means

i tried changing the refresh rate, mine is set at optimal, but it kept saying i could damage my monitor so wasnt sure whether to change it or not

Hello
Try going to your control panel /display /settings
and play with your resolution settings. maybe try taking the screen area to 800 x 600 making things smaller.
If you have black on the edges of your monitor I gotta agree with Bipolarbill..your monitor is going or you have the wrong drivers.

be well

i dont have any black areas around the edges, the display carries on, the explorer windows are too big to fit on the screen

Chezza-
Click Start-settings-Active Desktop-Customize my desktop-and click settings then Advanced. Tell us what you find there. You may have options to adjust the size of your viewable screen.

Ok. What brand and model of monitor do you have? Next look in Device Manager > Monitors and see what you have as the driver for the monitor.

Frankly, it sounds like the horizontal control circuit on the display (monitor) is shot.

there are 7 tabs:

adapter: driver info as in last post, and refresh rate which is set to optimal.

colour management: current monitor ibm 2235 C50,
using default monitor ibm 6541

sis video settings

sis gamma

general: display (fonts)
compatitibility, whether i want to retart when i change
colour settings

monitor: automatical detect plug and play (which is ticked)
reset display on suspend/resume (ticked)

performance: graphics hardware acceleration, (set to full)

hope this is what you meant, thankyou all for helping me

You'll be looking for something that allows you to set your horizontal and vertical settings for you display device (monitor). Are there any other advanced buttons on those tabs? You might also be able adjust settings on the video button. Or try control panel-system and see if a settings tab is there.
I'd think you'd be able to use the buttons on the front of your monitor-horiz. and vert.
There is a way to skin that cat if you'll pardon the expression.

Use the buttons on the front of the monitor. I'd bet a nickle you can fix your problem there. Horiz. centering or vert. centering, anything that says horizontal then play with that.

I'm telling you, mate, it's got to be there, or on the desktop settings tabs. Did you try the company website?
Seriously, even on an old IBM PS2 monitor I have I can change the screen size. Someone said 800x600, try that and moving the picture around. Try them all.
Sorry I couldn't be of any more help. But it doesn't sound like a driver or anything wrong with the monitor. Is the picture becoming less and less bright? That would signal monitor death throes.

Image centering is a function of some specific video drivers, Steve. Not all driver sets allow this. My nVidia drivers for this G2 GTS do not.

His setup looks right. It's a bad horizontal circuit in the monitor itself.

Oh, a Sheila. Well, that explains it. I'm kidding, I'm kidding I promise you. But at least all I owe you is 5 cents. There are lots of other places on the web you can look for answers. Like how to fix a circuit if that's the problem. Or how much that will cost ya.
Good luck

i went to the ibm site and found there was an update/patch for the driver so i installed that, and tomorrow im taking it down to a guy to see if its the actual monitor. Thankyou all so much for your help, it was really appreciated.
