I can't figure this one out...it's probably plain as day too. I have two computers networked to a 3Com router/gateway. There's a printer port on the router and we should be able to configure the printer driver to print directly to the router. After installing the driver and setting up the printer in the printer properties(it's set to print to the router, 192.168.2.1). However when I print, it appears to be sending the job to the router, but nada. It just hangs up and says 'printing'. When I try to browse for a network printer, it finds nothing. The instructions for the router doesn't say anything about any configuring in the router set-up. Any ideas???

In the details for the printer properties, check the port. It should be 192.168.2.1. If it's not, use the "Add port" mini-wizard and just type in that IP.

Some printers, like the HP Deskjet 722C, cannot be used as stand-alone network printers (they use features, such as Kodak's "Image Enhancement" that are software driven as well as hardware driven) and require they be connected to a printer server. Check your printer's website to ensure that your printer CAN be used as a "jet direct" type network printer.

Which 3Com product is this? I can't find mention of a router with print server on their site.

Thanks for your help. This (http://www.3com.com/products/en_US/detail.jsp?tab=prodspec&sku=3C510&pathtype=purchase) is the one I have. It's discontinued, that's why I got it for a good price. The IP address for the router is set up in the printer properties under 'PRT: mate'. That's all it says in the directions to attach a printer.
Perhaps it's not defined as a 'print server', but it has a printer port that is used for the networked computers to share. I have to check at the website to see if what jmichna is saying could be what's going on. Sounded easy in the directions.

3Com defines it as a "print server" alright. Here's your manual:

Mine is an HP printer, after checking, I guess I'm out of luck, it can't be used as a stand-alone network printer. I guess it's going to be connected directly to one of the computers then.
Bill, jmichna, thanks for the help.

Bill, jmichna, thanks for the help. Too bad:(
I'm in the same boat... I have the jetdirect device (free from a friend), I have an open port on my router... but my HP 722C is a NoGo. This is definitely something I will watch for when we replace this printer.
sigh....

You should still be able to share the printer, it will just have to be attached to a computer.
