I use my router for ease of connecting my one cable modem internet LAN to a number of PC's around the house and the fact that it's a firewall.

My question is one of my friend's can't send me a file and think i might understand that a port has to be open'd or something like that......the manual isn't or doesn't explain how to do this....dah!!

I've review'd the posts here and think someone knows how and would appricate them passing the info. here or PM me....

Thanks
AC

Have you used the Linksys browser setup at all? In the IE address bar, type:

192.168.1.1

Password is admin - no username.

Go into the Advanced tab. Here you can make your PC the DMZ host long enough for the transfer. Just punch in your IP. It's not advised to leave it that way long.

You should have mentioned the application. Different apps use different ports. Go to the help site for the application and find out which ports it uses for transfers. Then you can use Port Forwarding.

You don't tell us how you want him to send a file. If it is through one of the messenger services (MSN, Yahoo, etc), go to http://www.practicallynetworked.com/index.htm and look at wireless special applications. If your router us uPnP enabled, it may be easier.

If the file is not too big, you can send it as an attachement in an e-mail. Some ISPs have limits on the size of attachments. If you are trying through FTP, some routers have ways of enabling an FTP server from behind the router.
