The other thing I will be looking for at the Computer Show Sunday is a couple new hard drives. To go with an abit kt7 raid.
I am sure there are a lot of opinions out there. May I hear some?

The IBM Deskstar 75GXP. I think that is one of the highest quality IDE hd's money can buy. I got the 45gb model not long ago.

Sorry for those who don't like IBM, but the 75GXP is the best IDE hard drive available.

Quantum has new drives called "AS" , all 7200 rpm with dense clusters.
These have rebates from $20-35.
The older 7200 Quantums are very fast too, but they whine on start and shut down.
IBM's are the quietest and the 5400 drives are ATA100 too, 20gb for $100.
The IBM 7200rpm are quiet and fast, the 15gb is about $115.
Maxtor's 7200rpm drives work though not as quiet as IBM.
During write they are louder than Quantum.
Haven't had any new WD drives to comment about.
so,,
1. IBM
2. Quantum
3. your quess is as good as mine

I agree with the others--- the IBM is the way to go. I just bought a Quantum Fireball Plus AS, which is also supposed to be a really good drive. If the prices had been equal, I'd have taken the IBM without batting an eye.
You might be interested in this. It's not the newest or shortest comparison, but pretty informative:

Best of luck!!

Yep, same drive as Warthog. IBM 75GXP Model DTLA-307045.
On the Promise controller, ATA-100 simply whizzes! http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/smile.gif (once I managed to get it working <g> )
And they sure are quiet! /me loves my IBMs http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/smile.gif

I'm a Western Digital fan. Excellent RMA service on a few used ones that had problems.
IBMs are great, they invented the technology and lead the way. However, they are known to run hot! Right Socalgal? http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/wink.gif

My favorite is one that works which in my case is 2 Fujitsu's, one over 2 years (never reformatted) old & the other 1 year old, a WD one year old and various Maxtor and Quantums very old.
I think it depends on how you treat them which makes the difference.....I tend not to drop them.

Thanks for all the good input, I have a 20 gig Fujitsu, and I have an old Deskstar.
Everyone laughed at me when I bought the IBM, (this was a few yrs ago) but I never had any problems with the drive.
Thanks again, think IBM is for me.

That's what I've heard, Roy http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/smile.gif I run an hdd fan in a bay for extra cooling.
Your question sparked a curiosity though, as to how hot these drives run.
I can't seem to find comparable thermal stats (comparing my IBM 45G ATA-100 with thermal monitoring (http://www.storage.ibm.com/hardsoft/diskdrdl/prod/ds75gxp40gv.htm) with a Western Digital Caviar WD400BB (http://www.westerndigital.com/products/drives/specs/wd400bbs.html) . Perhaps I'm just not seeing or understanding the specs. Maybe someone else could report some comparable thermal stats - it would be interesting.
I used to be a die hard WD fan and have no real complaints with WD, except for one RMA at 3 yrs and one recalled drive bought at a computer show. Excellent RMA support and turn-around w/WD, btw).
I love my 75gxp. Fast and quite.

hi there all
i have a quantum fireball 10.2 gig hd but it makes one hell of a lot of noise and acts kind of "freaky" (it makes a clicking noise) when playing certain games (shogun total war) whereas my old 3.2 gig fujitsu was very silent compared to this one, is this normal or what?
when i run Ezsmart it says my hard drive is ok
cheers
