With the help and advice of members of this forum, I have successfully built my first home-brew computer. This Frankenstein is based on many hand-me-down parts: a Gateway case and power supply, a Celeron 466 cpu, Linksys ethernet card, Sony cdu701 CD-ROM. I bought a Jetway motherboard with 256 RAM chip from Egghead and a WD 40 gig HD (7200). On the advice of YOU folks, I bought a VooDoo3 3000 AGP video card and a Soundblaster Live Value sound card. Add a Yamaha 8/8/24 CDRW and I'm set. I've got a total of ~$500 in it and it works great! Fortunately, the motherboard leaves much room for upgrading. Thanks again to all!

Oh yeah, once you put it together yourself, you not only know EXACTLY what's in there, but you have a much better understanding of what's going on, and what to do when you run in to trouble.
Feels good, huh?
And besides, what kind of computer would you get for $500 at your local discount department store?
Best of luck.

I have to agree with you By-tor.
I have never given in to buying a computer.
I like the idea of knowing exactly whats in my system.
The best part is you don't need an extensive computer background to build one
