I have recently assembled a PIII 1GHz system that seems to have a simple probolem that I can't seem to fix... the power button does not work at all. When I plug in the power cable the computer turns on and runs perfectly. When windows tells me I can now turn off the computer I again need to remove the power cable.

I have searched and search the web for simular probolems and most of them end up being BIOS settings. One inpeticular is a power setting for servers or computers that will boot during powerup but I'm almost positive my board does not support this. I can't seem to find the BIOS settings or jumpers that will sovle my probolem. Though I am no genious in a BIOS I have been working with hardware for a long time and am not a novice.

I've taken all the cards out exept the video, reset the BIOS, tried a different button, and tried a different power supply. The only thing left is the motherboard and its settings... somehow I dout the CPU, RAM or video are causing this. Opon inspection the pins on the motherboard and the surounding area look perfect, no inperfections. It is most likely a setting and not a physical failure.

Am I missing something simple here?? I have spent way to much time researching something this small already.

TYAN S2080 Tomcat I815
PIII 1GHz
256MB Crucial RAM
Matrox G550
300+ PS

The purpose of this computer is to run CAD (non 3D) and be stable. How am I suposed to convince my client the computer is stable if he has to use the switch on the powersupply because the one on the front does not work lol.

Your front panel connector for "PWR SWITCH" is probably misconnected. Try reversing it. See attachment.

Yeah thats what I think. Di you ever connect those little plugs from the case to the motherboard?

Nope...... that was the first thing I tried. Sorry I didn't post that. Sort of thought that was common sence.

May be the power switch is damaged. I faced such problem once.

Ok. Open up the case and short the board with the a screw diver.

Put the screwdriver were the Power switch should go. If that works then it is a bad button.

Bridged the power button pins on the motherboard with the screwdriver... nothing. Not a button probolem. Must be some setting in the BIOS. All the jumpers on the motherboard are labled and acounted for and none of them have anything to do with power managment or anything related.

Anyone know AMI BIOS really well? Is there a common setting that I've missed? All my option in the BIOS are somewhat self explanitory and none seem to help...

Taje the motherboard out of the case, set it on some cardboard keep the RAM, video card, power supply connected(no HD cd-roms) floppy

Plug in the moniter and other need plugs no short the board with the screw driver. Mabey you are shorting the motherboard out on the case(motherboard touching case).

Give that a try. Is you motherboard proped up on all it's pegs correctly?
