Rage Fury doesn't like XP

I recently installed Windows XP and when I tried to play a game such as half-life my fps never gets above 20 in opengl mode. With Win98 my fps was always 70-100. Maybe the ati drivers just suck but I was rather disappointed with that. I like using XP but I am a gamer also so I had to revert back to 98. Any suggestions as to why the Rage Fury Pro card dont work well with XP?

What drivers are you using? The ones built into XP? If so download the drivers from ATI's site...

Those are the drivers I had. I got them from the ati site. It ran better with the XP drivers though. Aint that funny? haha. I gave up and put 98 back on. Does anyone else have this problem?

Seems like a silly question, but how much RAM did you have in that system?

70-100fps is plenty quick enough for ANY gaming, but if your FPS starts dropping below 30fps in heavy action scenes... or even worse, if your system starts accessing the page-file (when it runs out of RAM), then it will shudder and look/feel very bad. Guess if you're averaging 70-100fps, but that's 'cos you're doing 150fps when the system's running properly and 15 when you're paging, then I think you'd have cause for concern.

Compare your ammount of physical RAM (main system memory) with the "Peak" usage whne you look at the Performance tab in Task Manager (Start - Run - taskmgr.exe OR Ctril-Alt-Del - Alt-T).... if your peak RAM usage is getting close on to your "Peak" usage level after a clean boot and then lauching a game, then that could be your prob.

What does my problem have to do with RAM when it works fine with WIN98? That made no sense. I have 786 Megs of ram and that should be enough to run a friggin game.

I think the point was that WinXP takes up more memory resources that Win98 does. 786megs should be more than enough however.
