This is an obscure question....... If I format my hard drive and insert a Win98 upgrade CD, it will go through the process until it gets to Upgrade Compliance. It then asks for a Win95 cd for verification and then it proceeds with the rest of the install. My question is: what specific file is it looking for on the older OS cd? Or is it checking serial numbers??

I do believe that it's SETUP.EXE.

A friend bought a copy of WinME upgrade for use with a new drive and was asked for a previous version of windows when he tried to install ME. He no longer had his origional Win95 disk. I gave him an old Win95 disk which I had no serial number for and it worked fine. I can't say what file ME was looking for but he was upgradeing so it was legal reguardless of what previous version was used. As far as I am concerned the best way to install an upgrade is a fresh install anyway.

It's not what previous version was used, it's whose. What you did may be "OK" as far as you are concerned, but don't presume for a moment to call it legal. No company sells an upgrade to be used on as many previous versions as possible, regardless who actually paid for it.
