Daily there are posts on this forum about software/hardware related problems. Most can be resolved by updating drivers and software. Also, people getting viruses or their machines starting to act funny!

I use a great free tool from ZDNet! Updates! At least once a week, sometimes more often, I receive an e-mail from them describing the lastest fixes, virus info, etc! Go here and subscribe and a lot of your problems should be taken care of http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/smile.gif At the site, you can have them scan your system and it will give links for the lastest patches/downloads that you need! It works good and does not place any "SPYWARE" on your system! Try it out, I think you will be pleased http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/smile.gif http://updates.zdnet.com/

Well, I always use all available updates. My system is very stable, and in many cases the updates fix common problems for me.

Of course, this is all system dependent. As with everything in life, what works for one person doesn`t always work for someone else.

I have to agree though, I hate it when I can`t download a patch of update to burn oto a cd for reference. The Microsoft updates are the worst! Except for IE and MediaPlayer, the others just download and install. I wish I could keep those on disk!

Roy and Groundzero, obviously you haven't been to the ZDNet update site nor tried it out!
Number 1: You down load only what you want!
Number 2: These are downloads from the manufacturer's site(s), not Windows auto-install horse-****! Yes, they can be copied to disk (hard, zip, floppy, CD, CDRW, JAZ, Whatever)!
Number 3: I've been using this free service for about two years and have never had a problem!

Before you jump up and condemn something, at least try it out!

There's only one place to go for the RIGHT drivers and updated drivers. I save the downloads on a zip disc in the event I need to re-install them. http://www.driversguide.com/

Log in: drivers

randy48 ~ clearly you're not addressing me, even though you were kind enough to mention my name. Thanks anyway.

Yes Roy, I was addressing you, not in any type of insulting or negitive way. It just bugs me sometimes when ya try and do something to help people and you get a couple dudes jumping up saying "oh no, that's no good!" My point, before you get negative on something...check it out first!

Roy and Groundzero, obviously you haven't been to the ZDNet update site nor tried it out!

apparently you didn't read what i wrote all the way thru....

i did it several times and i ended up messing up my computer every single time. i

every single time i used the zdnet it crashed all my comps. alot of people do not read all the small print on those things. when i asked to show me all my updates it would say in small print only if you have this version or this version. um excuse me when you want it search for updates on your computer you do not want something that won't work for your computer. plus it showed me that it wanted to install updates for things that already had updates. i just say to everyone to back up your info before you install anything from there. i only would do updates from the microsoft web site.

I'm both cautious and hesitant about updates. When it comes time to reinstall a grouchy application or the OS, the updates either are gone or must be done over too.

randy48 ~ Did I say "oh no, that's no good!"? NOPE.

My suggestion was one of caution about upgrades.

So, "before you get negative on something...check it out first!" ... and make sure you avoid a scattergun response. Don't include me in your feelings about someone else's ideas.

Now this message needs no answer. If you feel it's necessary, then I will add no moisture to the ground in your contest.

I just tried it, worked well for me, updated a couple things, disregarded about 12 others as unneccessary tho...
