I tried Win95b defrag.exe on Win98 and it worked! Fast!

Another great defragging program you might want to try is Diskeeper 5. Diskeeper has a feature to defrag the PageFile (Which is impossible with Windows Defrag.exe) and consolidate directories using the "Boot-Time-Defragmentation" option. And just for normal defrag, it defrags the disk in just minutes. Diskeeper also allows multiple disk defragmentation simutaneously. Unlike Windows Defrag, it won't restart the defragging when you use the system while you defrag due to file changes when defraggging. You can just use the system as you normally would while you defrag the disk(s).

Another great feature if you are using NTFS file system. It has an option called "Frag-Guard" which minimizes fragmentation of files on NTFS. It has a "PageFile Frag Guard" and "MFT Frag-Guard" to minimize fragmenattion.

Yup, Diskeeper's like Windoz Defrag on steroids.
CMon, you might try unchecking the "Rearrange programs to start programs faster........" on W98's Defrag for it to work faster. From what I've read, this option is mostly hot-air w/so much associated overhead that it's actually counter-productive, particularly w/today's fast HDs.

Anyway you look at it, Win9x defrag works too slow and the waiting around until defrag is done so that defrag doesn't start all over because the "File Contents Have Changed" is just a BIG PAIN IN THE ****!

I replaced my Windoze'98 SCANDSKW.EXE & DEFRAG.EXE with the same files from WindozeME. Quite a bit faster. (Although I've recently started using Norton 2001 to do the same task, even faster yet.)

OuT, um...... know where one can "stumble" upon a copy of WinME's Scandskw.exe? Already got Defrag.
