80-Minute Media;
Because of recent in-house testing, HP has discovered that recording to this media can be unreliable.
The manufacturing process for creating 80-minute discs is difficult, and reduces the track pitch tolerance necessary to meet Orange Book specifications.
HP believes this reduces the reliability below HP's strict quality standards.
As a result, created discs may be unreadable; therefore, we discourage using this media for storing critical information at this time.

Just FYI, in case anyone has "unexplained" write failures.

You'll also notice that if Sony and Maxell make 80 min CDR's, they are very hard to find. I suppose they'd rather irritate a few people by not providing them with what they want rather than give their products a bad name by manufacturing something unstable.

I use Office Depot 80min CDR's and haven't had a problem "yet"

Most of my burns are at 2x or 4x .

BTW, I use a HP 8250i

Thanks and will keep a more watchful eye...

I guess HP just doesn't want us to buy their burners. I've heard of no such problems with Yamaha, Plextor or my old Smart & Friendly.

given how unreliable hp writers tend to be in the long run, are you suprised? i haven't heard of these problems on other drives either, especially if you use the preferred media though the generic stuff should work also.

I think everyone missed the real point here!

Basically, HP are just covering their own *** because they know there is an issue with certain models of their CDRW range. Of course, they won`t tell us which models they are, and rather than embarrass their "Wonderful" name, they discourage consumers of their products from using this type of media.

It`s like anything in business. If it don`t work like it should, make a disclaimer that denies all responsibility!

The best advice would be to buy a pack of ten cd`s. Try them out. IF they prove unreliable, stop using them. You could try a different brand also. If you use good quality brands, and you still get poor results, it`s probably the writer. In this case, stop using 80 min media all together. In the long run, you won`t loose much, what does a pack of 10 cd`s cost, about £8 here, about $10-$12 over there?

Anyway, just my £0.02 worth! http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/wink.gif

TD.

EDIT: Kept putting funny symbols in front of £ signs on it`s own. Spelling checker did it I think. http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/wink.gif

I use the Yamaha 16X 10X 40X Drive and burn the 80 min CD's that I get from Fry's (10 for 4$. Burn them at 12X) and have not had any problems. My dad has made over 130 CD's and they all work perfectly fine, as long as you treat them right and dont go Throwing them around and leaving them sitting on top of you stereo to collect dust.

Im just waiting for Fry's to have their CD's 16X certified so i can use my CD-R drive to the max. Even though it will only shave off a couple minutes.

I agree this is a case of CYA. I've got an HP 7200e and a 9100i. Both have worked flawlessly with 80 min blanks, from Imation to Verbatim to generic silvers.

storm2k, I'm curious as to how many HP writers that you've personally had this problem with..

Most users here have stated that HP CD-RW's are quality merchandise..

Please enlighten us..

Nothing for me to worry about really as I own a Plextor http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/smile.gif

Its not like any CDRW is deemed useless if it can do 80-min discs, just go back to good 'ol 74-min ones http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/smile.gif

Really nothin' to fuss about....

Check for firmware updates for your burners. I have a Plextor 12/10/32 and will update it
