For me anyways... Woke up this morning and noticed my computer's PS was running , but nothing else was. Smelt funny as well. So I went to turn it off and I couldn't. Ended up having to pull the cord out. I put the cord back in and NO POWER. Computer smelled like burning plastic. Pulled case off and pulled out the PS. Took the PS apart and it was fried!!! Thank goodness it didn't go any further. Not sure what happened. But it shorted out and turned on for some reason.

Sweeper, what type Power Supply/Computer do you have? There's been quite a few posts lately about PSUs burning up, maybe a certain brand people should stay away from?

Dont inexpensive surge protectors have circuitry that trips a pushbutton breaker when such things begin to happen???

Have a home built system. The PSU was LCT Technology Inc. ATX-250W. My surge protector is an RCA SCP-40.

Surge protectors work good (normally) with power going into the computer, but if the PSU circuitry fails, it won't help http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/frown.gif

Hope your mobo is not fried. I would be surprised if it was not. If it was not, then you are VERY lucky.

Also, unless you work with electronics on a reg basis, it is not agood idea to open a PS unit. They can pack a whallop even when unplugged.

Dave is right - those capacitors can really pack a jolt & they stay charged for a long time! be carefull.

Everything seems to be working fine. Yeah, I have heard that those PSU can give you a good jolt. I kept my paws off the internals. Just wanted to see what was left....A big burnt mark. Yes, I feel very lucky nothing else fried. WHEW..
