Hi.
I want to have information on Cable connection.
I have been told that users on the network who have also cable connection (we will be on the same network) can access my PC.
Is this true? If it is,how can we prevent this? is it by using Zone alarm? or what? Any suggestion please?
I am asking because one week from now,may be I'll be using that kind of Connection.

Yes you can be "hacked" with cable. But you also could with dsl or dial-up. It is just easier to do against cable since it is Always on.
Get a good firewall zonealarm or outpost. You can also get a router.
With a good firewall you should have no problems.

Norton Personal firewall,or Norton internet security,or Zone alarm will keep me safe ?
Concerning the router, what will be its role? How should it be installed ? Any settings will be necessary?

Yes those firewalls should do the job. Also make sure and have an updated virus protection software running. (nortan)
I am sorry but I am not very knowledgeabke about routers. I have never used one. So I cant really help you out their.
Sorry

I am also connected via cable, and concerned with security issues.
Wanting to install a FireWall, I was thinking on Tiny Personal Firewall, since it is said it consumes not many resources.
Anyone knows about it?
Is it efective?
Awaiting reply...
...desperatly!

A cable connection ties you to a LAN, your ISP's lan and to the internet. When your pc is turned on you are connected to the LAN and internet whether you launch your browser or not. Your pc has about 35,000 ports that are open to the public if you dont close 'em. Two things to secure your system, a anti-virus program and a firewall to open/close them ports. There a 2 excellent free ones:
AVG anti-virus, www.grisoft.com
Zonealarm, www.zonealarm.com

outpost firewall also consumes few resources.
Zonealarm consumes a ton.

My brother has a cable modem. It has been on and off switch. Presumably when you turn it off there is no chance of someone accessing your PC. Nevertheless, he uses a firewall.

Good way to work offline. Of coarse if ya share the modem on a lan that wont work. :)

I have never had a resourse issue with Zonealarm. Ive had ZA on many types of configurations without causing any problems. Thats not to say that its not given others a headache, although I've heard no complaints. Norton and others also use resourses heavily. There are many Firewall progs available, just find one thats suits you and your configuration.

in my opinion.. zone alarm is the best but it slows down your system resources a bit more than other software firewalls

Thanks all for your inputs. I wanted to have a full idea before switching to Cable, and really I had it.
Thanks
