Does anyone know what the name Nintendo means in Japanese? I bet you don't! :p

"We do all we can, as best we can":)

You're getting there...according to what the Nintendo rep told me:

"We do all we can, the best that we can and await the results."

That is supposed to come from the three Japanese words Nin-ten-do.

I asked this because I watched the history of video games on the History channel, and they gave the menaing for Nintendo, but they gave a completely wrong meaning. I can't remember what exactly they said, but it was no where near the correct meaning.

I looked it up on google and all the sites I went to didn't have the last part listed.

From Gamespot.com's History of Nintendo Feature (http://videogames.gamespot.com/features/universal/hist_nintendo/2.html):

The word "Nintendo" is composed of three Japanese kanji characters that translate roughly into English as "left to heaven's hands."

Well, Mr. Sparkle, I believe that was the meaning I heard on the History Channel, but I have to go with what the Nintendo representative told me. However, there could be more than one translation.

I might email the Nintendo reps again and ask about the other translations. It might make a good research paper or something.

I never said I was right, I was just posting what Gamespot said.

I didn't say that you were wrong. I was just saying that I was going to go with what the rep told me. I do enjoy you giving me other translations for Nintendo. I said that I was going to looking into it. You never know. We all could be right.

Nintendo reps aren't exactly the most reliable folks on the face of the planet, so don't put too much stock into what they say. A Nintendo rep is a person that travels from store to store, following their route. They usually make it to each of their stores once a month. It is their job to take signage and demo hardware, that is sent to their home via UPS, to the stores and set it up as displayed in their binder. They rarely interact with the other Nintendo employees and are pretty much left "out of the loop".

When I was in retail, I usually surprised my rep by knowing more than she did. As a matter of fact, she would get the list of release dates from me. I could easily look them up online, but for some reason, Nintendo couldn't get it right, and pretty much filled each column with TBA (to be announced), instead of dates.

She would often tell me about upcoming games or hardware, and would tell me it was a rumor, nothing concrete yet. I would assume because of her simply relying on her attache full of pamphlets and a head full of rumors that she would not be the most reliable of sources for information.

I know that reps are not the best people in the world.

Plus, I never said I didn't believe anything different that people posted here. I finally decided that there are different translations of the word and that we all are probably right.

I think it roughly translates to "Give Me Your Money!"

I don't mind giving Nintendo my money if they release good products, which they do.

I once got a question in a quiz game : When did the Nintendo appear ?

ANSWER : near the end of 1800s (!) Nintendo produced playing cards.

The nintendo came out around 1985 (can't remember exact year).
The Nintendo company has been around for much longer, though. If the question was worded as you wrote it, then 1800's wouldn't be correct.

As a bit of additional trivia, anyone remember the Nintendo titles on Atari? I'll start you off with one.. "Mario Bros.". Can anyone list any others?

It is also a known fact that more kids can reconigze Mario more than Mickey Mouse.

Funny, when I was researching this fact, my little cousin came up to the computer and said, "It's Mario."

What was the first video game that Nintendo actually produced? It wasn't for the Atari or any system, but the handheld called Game & Watch. The character Mr. Game & Watch is a secret character on Super Smash Brothers Melee.

Well, there is book about the history of Nintendo. I don't have the name on me right now...I was reading it in my brother's Gamepro magazine. Let me look it up and I'll tell you later.

Plus, there are plenty of websites that deal with the company Nintendo and their history. It is very suprising with Nintendo did and how they started out. I always believed that they only started in the mid 1980s and made only video games. I didn't know that they were over 100 years old and made playing cards when they first started in Japan.

Finally, if you are thinking about getting a Gamecube, I highly recommend it. My brother got his for Christmas and it is 100 times better than the N64. Plus, the games rock!

The games for it also look very impressive. Resident Evil, Super Smash Bros. Melee, Sonic, etc. Too bad it's a little too expensive for me right now, otherwise I'd love to get one!

Super Smash Bros. Melee is the greatest video game ever. How can you lot love a game in which you can use Donkey Kong or Ganondorf to beat the holy hell out of Pikachu?

I play with Kirby. Even though Nintendo has cancelled many of his game, he still kicks **** with his rock and suckup attacks.

Actually, Samus & Link are my favorite characters...I just get a kick out of DK squashing Pikachu like a bug.
