do ICQ work with Cable modems? It`s gonna be installed on the 24th Jan, so I would like to know in advance if it works.....

Cable modems are kinda a new thing here, still very unkown! http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/smile.gif Looking forward to it though!

Thanks,
TD.

Yep, ICQ works just fine with ICQ, but I haven't seen file transfer speeds higher than 40KB/sec though my cable connection speed is at 800kb/sec. I think it something that ICQ is limiting. http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/frown.gif

Cable modems are a high speed connection to the internet. ICQ would work just fine with a cable modem.

I gotta learn to type faster so I can be the first to reply. http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/smile.gif Kinda odd that we both choose to use "just fine."

I've had cable for a year. Trading files on ICQ works like a champ. I've hit speeds as fast as 70KB/s.
Last month though, @home finaly implemented their cap. Now I hit around 112kb/s using ICQ.

I envy you, 3beanlimit. I wish I could get transfer rates like that over ICQ..... http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/frown.gif I'd be getting things done alot faster!

Thanks Guys!

Dunno what I`d do without my ICQ! Heard reports that ICQ doesn`t work on ASDL, but that might be just our typical country!

See ya!

Merry Christmas,
TD.

1. would still recomend usin zonealarm, its free so what the heck.
2. Cable works fine here with ICQ. Max upload here in Australia with @home is capped to 128Kbit (16KByte), download is meant to be capped at 360KBytes, but last night i got it up to 480KB dling from nvidia (altho i don't even have a nvidia card lol was just testing something).

man i wish @home would put up the capping on d/ling alittle, i'm happy with the d/l, but u/l could atleast be 256Kbit (32KB). But what can we do about it? nothing.

Whether ICQ will work with a cable modem depends on your ISP’s configuration. When I first got my cable modem, ICQ would not work until my ISP revised their network in a way that ICQ would work.

Should be no reason why ICQ wont work with a cable modem, mine always has.

As for firewalls, there's too many reviewers that rave about ZA, it's free easy and the best (I knew a girl like that once), who can beat that? I've used it for over a year now, gone thru all their troubled versions and I am still a loyal user...it works with my Win95b, Win98, WinNT4.0, Win2k.

If you have a one-way cable modem; such as I do, with telco return, ICQ running on a home network is not so simple (yes - it will run on the server w/o problem). Had to get winproxy for my son's icq to be working on another computer through the one-way (telco return)

RalphArch get yourself a DSL/Cable Router, the best $150 I've spent in a long time http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/smile.gifNo more complaints about ICQ, Napster, etc http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/smile.gif http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/smile.gif
