do I need a hub if I'm just transfer files between 2 computers and not multiple computers? using ethernet that is.

no, you may also use a crossover cable

ah... we'll getting a hub might solve my printer problem, I think.

WIth only two devices having actual network cable connections, there isn't a functional difference between a crossover cable and a common hub/switch.
